Ice Cap is now accepting preorders for the new, significantly updated versions of their popular Gyre Wavemaker series: 2K and 4K. The company plans to start shipping them out in the first week of December.
Speaking with Jeff Johnston of Coralvue, the main differences between the newer models and the previous 1k and 3k are:
- More powerful than their predecessors
- Better control than their predecessors
- The controller uses the CoralVue HYDROS platform
- One controller can power 2 pumps
- The controller is backward compatible and works with all IceCap Gyre models: 1K, 2K, 3K, and 4K
- The new Gyres are Direct Drive compatible with the HYDROS WaveEngine, so you’ll be able to buy a “pump only” version and directly connect that to the WaveEngine with the proper adapter which can then control and power it.
These are some of the key features that were included in the press kit. Some of these are obvious as one would come to expect from Gyre wavemakers.
- Unique Gyre Flow: Virtually Eliminates Dead Spots
- Evenly Distributed Linear Flow
- Discrete Design
- Can Be Mounted Vertically or Horizontally
- Can Be Mounted Close to the Water Surface
- Waterproof Magnet Mounts
- Twin Directional Flow Cages
- Includes 2 Sets of Propellers: Orange and Black
- HYDROS WaveEngine Direct Drive Compatible
- 1-Year Limited Warranty
Something I really like is the waterproof magnet mounts. I have a peninsula style tank and it’s a pain to mount decent power heads on the overflow without worrying about magnets rusting.
With confirmation from Coralvue that these are in fact saltwater sealed, I can put it in the back part of the overflow eliminating any possible dead spots. I expected the Hydros Wave Engine compatibility as it is their new flagship program. With it, I will be able to create different types of waves that the regular controllers just simply won’t be able to produce. I’m particularly interested in seeing how many anti-sync will work on these units. Aesthetically, I like the thin form factor and am kind of liking the orange propellers. It will be easier for me to see if my propellers are dirty and if they are in need of cleaning.
