When you’re exploring the deep sea, seeing stars is *not* a problem!
The scoop from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute: Brisingids are unusual sea stars found in the deep sea. They are different from typical sea stars because they use the spines on their arms as velcro to capture tiny prey as food.
This one, surrounded by brittle stars, was found 1,700 meters (~5,580 feet) below the surface on the Taney Seamounts, a chain of four volcanoes that lie 333 kilometers (180 nautical miles) due west of Monterey Bay.
