Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas)
Stranding Location: Dewee’s Island, SC
Arrival Date: 6/13/2020
Age: Juvenile
Weight: 5.9 (lb)
Case History
Wando was found in the intracoastal by the Eco Island Barrier Tour group, floating and unable to dive. SCDNR permit holders, Barb Gobien and Mary Pringle, were able to quickly respond to the scene and transport the turtle to the STCC for further diagnosis and treatment. The turtle was in decent body condition and the bloodwork was not terrible. Wando’s blood sugar was slightly low, which was corrected with fluids. The radiographs and CT scan revealed some gas in the GI tract, as well as possible free-floating air in the coelomic cavity.
Treatment
Wando was started on antibiotics, and given fluids and vitamins before being moved to a shallow tank.
Update
June 15, 2020: As expected, Wando was buoyant in the tank, and will therefore be started in shallow water until some of the gas makes it way out. The turtle has begun defecating small amounts and eating a few pieces of fish every day. Recently we administered a capsule of BIP’s (Barium Impregnated Polyethylene Spheres) in his fish. These small radiopaque beads will be able to be followed through the digestive tract with a series of radiographs, to look for any potential blockages. Send good vibes Wando’s way!
