Caribbean reef sharks swim over a coral reef in The Bahamas.Predators, like sharks, are essential to the health of ecosystems. The value of sharks to the Bahamian economy has also been recognized however, and as a result they have been protected. A living shark contributes hundreds of thousands of dollars to ecotourism during the course of their lives. In time however, perhaps we will value sharks not only for the dollars their lives contribute to human civilization.
