The Marine Science Magnet High School (MSMHS) is equipped with a student run aquaculture facility that has the capability to grow a wide variety of aquatic organisms, from both fresh and saltwater environments. Students engage in the creation of ecosystems, organization of the facility, maintenance of aquatic habitats, and so much more. Through the aquaculturing of fish and corals, MSMHS is helping to reduce the stress on the wild populations by providing locally grown organisms to stores throughout New England. Students learn first-hand the impact they have on the ocean, the importance of aquaculture, and are empowered to find solutions to real world problems. The experiential learning that happens every day in the aquaculture lab reinforces these concepts and the importance of environmental stewardship.
Since opening in 2011, MSMHS has made a big splash in education with its innovative and rigorous curriculum within the walls of a fun and energetic school culture and climate. Visit their website HERE to learn why MSMHS has been nationally recognized by Newsweek, US News & World Report, and The Washington Post as one of the best high schools in Connecticut and the nation.
