If you’re anything like giant kelp, you may need your own floaties to stay on the surface! These buoyant bulbs, known as pneumatocysts, are filled with oxygen from photosynthesis, carbon dioxide from cell respiration and a little carbon monoxide from incomplete combustion of sugars.
The pneumatocysts float the kelp plant to the sea surface to help form a living canopy of veggie solar-panels that power the kelp forest. There’s a lot of fresh kelp growing up around the Monterey Bay at the moment!
