A bat ray hovers above the sandy seafloor, giving off moody vibes in this black and white photo. The bat ray has a dark grey back and a white belly and is facing head-on to the camera with its wings gently lifting off the sand.

Holy mackerel, bat ray!

While these excellent elasmobranchs are no caped crusaders, they do have some impressive tricks up their sleeves. These rays swim by flapping their giant bat-like wings—appearing to fly gracefully through the sea. When they need to rest, they use the sandy seafloor as their hideout—burying themselves so they remain hidden from view.
