Hey everyone. We’re very sad to report that beloved wild Otter 501 has died in California’s Elkhorn Slough. Her rescue and release were immortalized in PBS Nature’s “Saving Otter 501,” and she went on to care for several pups of her own as an integral part of the Elkhorn Slough sea otter community for the last 11 years.
Otter 501 and other surrogate-reared pups we’ve returned to the wild since 2001 are helping rebuild California’s threatened sea otter population and restore damaged ecosystems.
Otter 501 was 11 years old when she died in March. Her legacy lives on with the next generation of otters helping to restore their home into a thriving coastal wetland.
