A chocolate drizzle flatworm drapes its thin body over the shadowy blade of a red algae, its two ear-like auricles making a “V”-shape on its head near the bottom of the scene. Along its white body are swirls of deep brown, like chocolate syrup.

🍫❗️This post is for chocolate lovers❗🍫

Behold, the chocolate drizzle flatworm! While it may look  like chocolate syrup on the foam of a hot winter beverage, this platyhelminthian pancake prefers to prowl the chilly coastal waters of the Eastern Pacific Ocean.

Like other flatworms, this species is hermaphroditic, meaning its body carries both sperm and eggs. When it comes time for romance, flatworms gotta stay en garde; instead of courting a mate, they engage in hypodermic impregnation – also known as penis fencing – where they try to inject sperm into the tissues of a mate while avoiding being poked themselves 👀
