Ask not by whom the giant bell jelly strolls, it strolls by thee!
Scrippsia pacifica giant bell jellies have been spotted wooshing past the Monterey Bay area the last few weeks. Lined with red eye-spots and plentiful tentacles, giant bell jellies are quintessential hydromedusae, cousins to the denser, more opaque scyphozoan jellyfishes like sea nettles and moon jellies.
This gorgeous drifter a few inches tall was spotted yesterday off the coast of Big Sur by local photographer Joe Platko!
