Along the wave-swept coastline of Monterey Bay, beneath the towers of giant kelp, thickets of woody sea palms compete for what’s left of the sunlight before it reaches the reef. Long-living and built for rugged conditions, these kelps create a forest-within-the-forest several feet tall. Here a southern sea palm, Eisenia arborea, extends into the current on an exposed boulder facing out to the Carmel Canyon.
