MY Trip to MACNA 2017

What’s going on SaltNation?  I had the pleasure of going to MACNA this year and I wanted to take you along for the ride. The Marine Aquarium Conference of North America (MACNA) is the oldest marine aquarium conference in North America. This year will mark the 29th conference. Every year a club who is a member of the Marine Aquarium Society of America (MASNA) is chosen to host MACNA. Next year will be the first time that MACNA will not be hosted by a club so it will be interesting what direction it will head in.

MACNA is a combination of several events with a strong focus on educational seminar, where people can attend lectures and workshops from industry leaders, conservationists, authors, and scientists. The other side of MACNA is the trade show where hobbyists can see the latest equipment being developed and buy corals, fish and everything a hobbyist want.

MACNA also has some amazing raffles where you can win some GFO all the way to a trip to Fuji and all it takes is one ticket to win.

My Trip to MACNA 2017

My goal with the MACNA 2017 videos was to capture the event and not just go both to both talking with the equipment vendors about whats coming out this year. There’s nothing wrong with this but so many YouTubers already do it and I want to show the experience of MACNA.

MACNA 2017 | Day 2

On day 2 I sat in on a lot of talks to get the most out of the day. I’m going to be putting a play list together of all the speakers I got to see on day 2. Day 2 of MACNA 2017 didn’t disappoint.

Things I’m going to do different for MACNA 2018

This was my first trip to MACNA and I leaned a lot about what I would like to do differently for next year’s MACNA. This list was meant for myself but I thought it would be helpful to share anyone planning to attend MACNA for the first time.

  • Downloading the MACNA app was incredibly helpful to stay up-to-date on all the workshops and speakers. It also gave you notifications when workshops and speakers were about to take place.
  • Bring a partner with me to assist me with all the videoing and interviews to capture more of the event.
  • I’m going to arrive a few days earlier and leave on the last day of MACNA to minimize the stress to the corals while flying home with them.
  • Even though my goal this year was the capture the overall experience I would like to get more of the equipment involved in next year’s videos.

Final Thoughts on MACNA 2017

I found this years event incredibly informative and for a long time I only thought MACNA was for advanced hobbyists but now I realize that MACNA is for all level of hobbyist. I wish I could have split myself in two to capture more of the event but this coming year I’m bringing my other half and putting her to work.
