Male sheephead are icons of the kelp forest. Beginning their lives as females, pretty in pink, they change sex later in life, ultimately growing into this classic black, orange and cream uniform, at once signifying their elder status to the rest of the reef—and also perhaps their SF Giants fandom.
More research is required on this latter point.
